A weekend evening for the atmosphere, a weekday late afternoon if you want a garden table

This is the kind of place people from Nha Trang go on a Saturday night and visitors almost never find: garden restaurants on the city's edge, thatch or corrugated roofs, long wooden tables, and a kitchen doing goat, young beef, free-range chicken, beef hotpot and river fish. Seven of the ten lie west or south, 4–8 km from the tourist quarter, which is a 60,000–120,000₫ taxi each way. In return you sit in a garden or beside a river rather than in a street, and the prices are well below the seafront row.

Two boards at the shops say what an evening costs. Nhà hàng Đồng Nội at 49 Hồng Bàng is a goat house, and its menu sits at almost a single price: nearly every goat dish: steamed with ginger, with perilla, rare with lime, braised, stir-fried with pennywort, is 299,000₫, with a large plate at 429,000₫. Lẩu bò Bà Triệu is the opposite, cheap and itemised: a beef hotpot from 160,000₫, then extra bowls of this or that at 40,000–190,000₫ depending on the cut.

Three of them sit on the water, and those are the ones most worth the drive. Cậu Béo Hội Quán at 376 Lương Định Của has a bamboo deck out over the Cái river, facing the western hills; a banner still on its gate dates the opening to 22 October 2023. Quán Gió Cầu Bè in Phú Vinh puts its tables under trees at the water's edge and opens earliest of anywhere on this page: 6:30 in the morning, so it is both the local breakfast spot and an evening drinking house. Vườn Ao Xanh at 72a Xuân Lạc builds its dining deck out into a lake, reached by a bamboo bridge, with long tables against the rail looking at the mountains.

If you would rather not travel, three are inside the city. Đồng Nội at 49 Hồng Bàng and Gà Quê Diên Khánh at 27 Tô Hiến Thành are walkable from most central hotels; Gà Quê is the smallest of the three and the busiest, doing grilled chicken, chicken hotpot and congee, and it runs to 23:30, the latest on the page. Lẩu bò Bà Triệu on Bà Triệu street is about 2 km out, one long canteen-like room, packed on weekend nights, and closed between 14:00 and 15:00.

Two things to know before ordering a car. First, most of these have no English menu and the staff generally do not speak English. Going with someone who speaks Vietnamese makes the evening much easier, or order by pointing at the next table. Second, the real closing time is earlier than the posted one: seven of them list 22:00–22:30, and the kitchen usually stops taking orders about half an hour before that, so arriving by 21:30 buys a proper dinner rather than a rushed one.

This page is half the story of drinking in Nha Trang; the other half is seafood and draught beer for fish out of a tank, the snail places for small plates all evening, the grill houses if you want to cook it yourself, and the beer places if the drinking is the point.

    49 Hồng Bàng, open 10:00–22:00. The busiest place on this page, and central enough to need no journey. It is a goat house, and the arithmetic is easy to remember: nearly every goat dish: steamed with ginger, with perilla, rare with lime, braised, stir-fried with pennywort, is 299,000₫, with a large plate at 429,000₫. It also does seafood and a whole roast goat carved at the table for a large party. The roof terrace is set for banquets and fills on weekend nights.

    The sign reads "Hệ thống Bò tơ Tây Ninh Năm Sánh Quyết Thắng — branch 15", out in the Cầu Dứa – Phú Nông area about 6 km west, open 8:00–22:00. It is the largest room on this page: one long tin-roofed hall with hundreds of blue plastic chairs, close to full on a weekend night. Young Tây Ninh beef is the dish: thin slices blanched at the table, rolled in rice paper, dipped in fermented anchovy sauce, with skewers and stir-fries alongside. No English menu, and the address is only a Plus code, so use the map button.

    55/3 Bà Triệu, about 2 km from the centre, open 10:00–14:00 and again 15:00–23:00, an hour shut in the afternoon. It is one long canteen of a room, steel tables, plastic chairs, full end to end on a weekend night. The board on the wall: a hotpot at 160,000–290,000₫ by size, then extra bowls by the cut at 40,000–190,000₫, blood at the bottom, tripe at the top. Cheap and filling, with nothing decorative about it.

    Phú Vinh hamlet in Vĩnh Ngọc, on a branch of the Cái river near Cầu Bè, some 7 km from the tourist quarter. Open at 6:30 in the morning, the earliest here, so it works as the local breakfast place and an evening drinking house both. Tables sit under trees at the water's edge with a stilt-house room behind. The kitchen does crisp-fried goby, raw fish salad, grilled ribs and country dishes, sound rather than clever. You come for the seat by the water and for the price.

    Street 6 in the Hà Quang 2 estate, open 11:00–23:00. One of the two latest here. A chicken house: grilled and fried chicken, skewers, fried fish, stir-fried greens, eaten in an air-conditioned room or on the first-floor balcony over the street. Hà Quang is about 3 km south of the centre on wide, easy roads. This one is tidier and brighter than most of the list, worth knowing if you want the atmosphere without sitting outdoors.

    Võ Nguyên Giáp street in the Mỹ Gia estate, open 7:00–22:30. A large garden restaurant: stone paths across grass, fruit trees, parasols by day and strings of lights at night. The kitchen does crisp rice cake, hotpot, sturgeon, platters of highland pork and country dishes meant for a full table. It is a newer place inside a planned estate, so the approach roads are wide and parking is easy.

Free-range chicken is the point: grilled and served on banana leaf, chicken hotpot, congee finished at the table, with fried prawns and fried chicken alongside. The room is not large, so ring ahead on a weekend night.

It is what the name says: a timber house under tiles, wooden posts and beams, greenery round the yard, a Tiger neon at the gate. The kitchen does goat: curry, steamed, hotpot, with fried rice and the usual sides. A big room, busy on weekend nights, with parking right outside.

    72a Xuân Lạc in Vĩnh Ngọc, about 8 km from the tourist quarter, the furthest on this page. Open 9:00–22:00. Its dining deck is built out into a lake, reached by a bamboo bridge, with long tables against the rail facing the hills. The kitchen does fried fish, sour soup, grill platters and country dishes. This is a place for an unhurried lunch or afternoon: 8 km for a quick dinner is not worth it, a long sit over the water is.
