Live music here does not run to a schedule. All eight places below have a band or someone playing acoustic, but only two can tell you which nights. Moonlight Chill Coffee says Friday to Sunday evenings, and The Pumm Central has music every night. Nhà Ven Sông says weekends. At Hòn Kiến the name promises live music and in the evening it delivers. The three beer places say only "some evenings". So this page does not tell you who is playing tonight. Nobody publishes that.

The eight split into three kinds, and the price follows the kind rather than the music, with The Pumm Central a late bar that sits outside all three. JD68 Skybar is a rooftop bar at 09 Biệt Thự in the middle of the backpacker quarter, with live music written into its own name. The three craft-beer places are The Junkyard, Men Tươi and Pallet Beer Station, all open from the afternoon. The three cafés are Hòn Kiến at 56 Đống Đa, Nhà Ven Sông on the river island, and Moonlight Chill on Phạm Văn Đồng.

Closing time decides more than you would think. The three cafés close at 22:00, so if the music is the point you need to be in before 20:00 to hear any of it. The beer places run later: Men Tươi to 23:00, Pallet to about 22:00, The Junkyard to 1am. But the Junkyard only opens Friday to Monday and shuts Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, so check the day before you set out. And Maps publishes no hours at all for JD68.

Four of them are walkable from the centre. JD68 is inside the quarter itself. Hòn Kiến at 56 Đống Đa is about 700 m away. The Junkyard at 33 Bạch Đằng and Men Tươi at 19 Trần Khánh Dư are one to one and a half kilometres. The other four need a vehicle: Pallet at 68A Bùi Thiện Ngộ in the south of the city, Moonlight on Phạm Văn Đồng by the Hòn Chồng shore, The Pumm at 312 Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai well inland, and Nhà Ven Sông at the end of alley 007 on the island of Cồn Ngọc Thảo, about 4 km from the quarter.

On price, exactly one of them publishes anything. The Junkyard keeps a chalkboard listing each beer with its strength and price, 70,000–100,000₫ a glass. The other seven post no board at all. A listing site puts The Pumm Central at 200,000–300,000₫ a head, but that is the listing's figure rather than the shop's own. And none of them says whether a music night carries a cover charge or a minimum spend. Ask at the door before you sit down, especially at a weekend.

If you want to talk, two of them suit that better than the rest. Hòn Kiến is not loud, the music is well chosen, and an artificial waterfall runs inside the room. Men Tươi is acoustic guitar, long wooden tables and a lit wall stacked with bottles. JD68 is a rooftop bar, the Junkyard and Pallet both have a band playing in the room, and The Pumm adds a DJ, so those four are considerably louder.

    09 Biệt Thự, upstairs, in the middle of the backpacker quarter. The place puts Live music in its own name, which sets it apart from the hotel rooftops on this page, where what is being sold is the view. It publishes no opening hours and no prices. Since it is upstairs with no large sign at street level, the reliable move is to stand below and look up for lights and sound before climbing.

    56 Dong Da. The name promises live music and in the evening it delivers, but the room is the more memorable part: baskets of shells and starfish from the door inwards, and an artificial waterfall running inside. It is not loud and the music is well chosen. You can hold a conversation. It opens at 6:30 so mornings work, but if the music is the point it has to be evening; the place closes at 22:00.

    33 Bạch Đằng, open 17:00 to 1am but only Friday through Monday. It closes Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, so check the day before you set out. This is a properly committed craft bar: a chalkboard listing each beer with its strength and price, 70,000–100,000₫ a glass. Cheapest is its own Go-Go Golden Ale at 4.1%, dearest the Juicy Lucy Hazy IPA at 7.5%. Geometric murals, a row of taps behind the bar, live music some evenings.

    19 Trần Khánh Dư, open 16:00–23:00. The sign outside reads "Tối cổ — craft beer", and inside there is a lit wall stacked with bottles, long wooden tables and a bright mural. It works mostly by the bottle, so you can line a few up and compare; the food is light: peanuts, salads, fried things. Some evenings someone plays acoustic guitar.

    68A Bùi Thiện Ngộ in the south of the city, open late afternoon to about 22:00. A small room. A warm yellow "PALLET BEER STATION" sign, tables inside and out on the pavement, and on some evenings a saxophone and guitar playing in the corner. The kitchen does fish-sauce chicken, salmon, sea grapes and other things to pick at. It is new and little known, so there is usually a free table.

    312 Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai, well inland rather than on the beach road. It is also not the same kind of place as the other seven: a large room with a stage and an LED wall across its full width, with the band up on a lit stage rather than one person with a guitar in the corner. It is the only place here with both a DJ and a band on the same night, and the only one with music every night rather than some evenings. Open 17:00 to 1am, the same closing time as The Junkyard but without the midweek days off. Around 200,000–300,000₫ a head. The number is 096 401 7768. More on the bars and clubs page.
