Late afternoon at the river and hillside places. The city faces east, so that is where the sunset is

Nha Trang faces east, so this city has no sunset over the sea. The sun goes down behind the western hills. That fact shapes the list below more than anything else: to sit and watch the light go, you have to get high, get to a river, or head west. Three places here sit on the Cái river, two on hillsides, and one on a ninth-floor roof terrace in the middle of town.

A good seat does not have to be expensive. Vũ Garden in the Mipeco estate charges 20,000₫ for a black machine coffee: the cheapest on any café page of this site, and the place is a Japanese-style garden with a red bridge over a koi pond, bonsai and tiled roofs, with a menu printed partly in Japanese. Cà phê Hòn Chồng View beside the rocks asks 23,000₫ for a black coffee. Vintage 198x on the southern hillside runs 30,000–50,000₫ a cup. Those three numbers make one point: in Nha Trang the view is not what you pay for.

The busiest of them is Nhà Ven Sông concept, at the end of alley 007 on Cồn Ngọc Thảo. An island in the Cái river about 4 km from the tourist quarter. It is an open-sided shed facing a coconut garden and the water, with a small stage and live music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights according to its own board. Nearby, Cham Riverside at 362/15 Lương Định Của lines its tables along the embankment, and CoCo Cafe at 80 Xuân Lạc builds a thatched deck out over a lake. All three need transport, and all three trade that inconvenience for something the centre cannot offer.

To look down on the bay there are two options, and they could hardly differ more. View Tỷ Đô on Nguyễn Cơ Thạch in Đường Đệ is a beach club raised above the water: timber decks over the sea, bean bags on imported sand, a thatched bar, and at night a straight view across to the city's lights. Vintage 198x in the south is the opposite: a timber house on a hillside, balconies over the valley and the sea beyond, listed on Maps as open around the clock. The coffee is no better than fine; you go for the seat.

Three places in town are worth going to for the room rather than the view. Nón coffee & more at 46/10 Lê Thánh Tôn is the most carefully made room of them: yellow walls, green shutters, a ceiling packed with conical hats, and hand-drawn latte art: a blossom tree, an apricot branch, on every cup. YEN coffee n more at 8 Đống Đa goes the other way: white, arched, planted, with a small stone courtyard, open 6:30 to 22:30. Góc Của Mây up alley 93 Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai has a stream running through the yard, tables at the water's edge, and opens at six in the morning.

Two of these suit families with small children, which is worth saying because café guides rarely do. Đường sắt Coffee at 707/1 đường 23 Tháng 10 is built entirely around a railway theme: there is real track laid indoors, and has a large indoor ball pit, so the children play while the adults sit. Cà Phê Bar Sky Garden at 49 Củ Chi also has a ball pit and a television showing football. At the other extreme, Huyền Thoại Núi Cà Phê at 36 Hòn Chồng is for people who want quiet: one huge old tree in the courtyard, a wooden stair winding around its trunk, and a counter selling beans to take home.

The five most-mentioned cafés right on the water are not on this list because each already has a page of its own: Sailing Club, Ana Beach House, The Busa Park, Moonlight Chill and the Wave Bar on Hòn Tre. An open-sided shed under a tin roof facing a coconut garden and the water, sand underfoot, strings of lights, and a small stage: its own board advertises live music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. It serves breakfast and full dishes by day and fills up after dark. The approach is a narrow lane, so follow the map pin.

It is done in a Hội An manner: yellow walls, green shutters, lanterns, a ceiling packed with conical hats, mosaic-topped tables, a corner of old televisions and a typewriter. The latte art is drawn by hand on every cup. A blossom tree, an apricot branch, a pattern. It is small and shuts early at 21:00, so do not save it for late.

By day it looks straight out at the bay and the mountains; after dark, across at the city's lights on the far shore. It serves food and beer as well as coffee, so an afternoon can run into an evening. About 6 km from the centre along the northern coast road.

It is built in a Japanese idiom: a two-storey timber house, a koi pond with a red bridge across it, bonsai, stone and tiled roofs; the logo is a bonsai and the name is written in Japanese as well. This is the cheapest coffee on any café page of this site: 20,000–40,000₫ a cup, from a 20,000₫ black off the machine to a cappuccino or matcha latte at 40,000₫. Teas, juices and even the pizza sit inside the same range. One catch: the printed menu carries the address 192 Điện Biên Phủ, which is not the address on Maps. Ask first if you are navigating by the menu.

Its full name is "Góc Của Mây Coffee & Vintage Corner": indoors it is timber, chandeliers and a large tree planted in the middle of the room; outside a small stream runs through the yard with tables at its edge and a flower garden behind. The drinks are elaborately presented, often in stemmed glasses, the place is built to be photographed and makes no secret of it. It is central enough to need no journey.

Its real distinction is a large indoor ball pit: with a slide and a carousel, which makes it one of the few cafés in Nha Trang where children have something to do. Do not confuse it with "Quán cà phê Đường Tàu" at 66a Nguyễn Trãi: different places.

Indoors it is cool and quiet, with a counter selling beans and brewing kit to take away. A place to sit for a while rather than to drop into.

It is a restaurant as much as a café, so a full meal is possible: grilled pork rolls, salads, fish, not just a drink. A long way out, repaid by the lake and the quiet.

Tables run along the embankment above the Cái river under palms and string lights, and the evening is when it is best. The prices split cleanly in two: breakfast 35,000–149,000₫, the cheapest being bread with a fried egg, and the restaurant card 145,000–395,000₫ a dish, topping out at the free-range chicken platter. You can order just a coffee, but this is a place to eat.

    The ninth-floor roof terrace at 1 Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai. The highest seat on this page, and in a city facing east, height is the only way to see a sunset. It looks across at the Trầm Hương tower and 2/4 square. The entrance is small, beside the Sigo supermarket at street level and easy to walk straight past, so find the sign and follow it down through the basement. The drinks are fine; you come for the view.

Are any of them good with children?

Two: Đường sắt Coffee at 707/1 đường 23 Tháng 10 has a large indoor ball pit and real track laid through the room, and Cà Phê Bar Sky Garden at 49 Củ Chi has a ball pit too. Koi Garden Cafe in the south has a koi pond, a pool and a lot of built set-pieces, but it is well out of the centre.
