What is here

Places to sleep, eat and go. Each one has its own page with an address, opening hours, a price range and a few common questions.

The one thing that sets it apart is that I write the bad parts too. If the beach in front of a hotel is public, I say so. If a resort is thirty-five kilometres out, I say every dinner in town is two car trips. If a hotel is up a side lane, I say it is up a side lane.

The English is written separately. It is not the Vietnamese run through a translator.

Where the information comes from

The place's own website first. If it has none, a public source I can check. Aggregator sites come last.

Where I am not sure, the page says I am not sure. One hotel page states outright that I could not verify its street number. Several food pages are about a dish rather than a shop, because two round-ups I read named thirty places and barely agreed on one.

The Dien Khanh citadel page takes its dates from the heritage plaque at the site. That plaque is in the page's own photo gallery, and you can read it.

The photographs

Every kind is labelled under the picture. Most are Ảnh tham khảo, reference photographs taken by customers and lifted from a shop's own Maps listing; the sources page says how far they can be trusted. Photographs a property sent me carry its name; those are its marketing shots, so everything looks better than it does in person. Wikimedia Commons photographs carry the author and the licence. The ones I took myself carry my name. Illustrative ones show a dish or an area rather than the exact place being discussed, and say so.

I do not publish photographs where a guest's face is recognisable, and I do not use one place's pictures for another. Both nearly slipped through and both came out on review.

What this cannot do

Prices and opening hours go wrong fastest. Seafood prices change daily, small places move their hours with the season, and nobody announces a closure. Before a long drive, ring ahead.

The star on each card is my own score. It is not an average of guest reviews and it does not come from Google Maps or any booking site.
