If budget is the deciding factor, the backpacker quarter around Hung Vuong, Nguyen Thien Thuat and Biet Thu streets is where to look. It's a few blocks packed with small hotels, hostels and guesthouses, from roughly 200,000₫ for a dorm bed to 700,000₫ for a double with a window.

The real advantage isn't only the price but the position: about three minutes' walk from Tran Phu beach, and right in among the food, the sidewalk coffee, the motorbike rentals and the island-tour desks. You won't need a vehicle for anything.

This is a district rather than a hotel, so this page has no pin and no room count. How to use it: walk Hung Vuong, Nguyen Thien Thuat and Biet Thu and compare a few places on the spot. In the October-to-December low season you can usually turn up, while the summer peak and public holidays want booking.

One thing to weigh when picking a room here: the quarter is noisy late, because it is where the eating and drinking happens. If you sleep lightly, ask for a high floor away from the street, the same advice applies at La Mer at 6D Hung Vuong, inside the same area.

If you are staying a while, there is one thing the quarter does far more cheaply than a hotel does: laundry by the kilo. Two shops sit inside the quarter itself, one advertising same-day service and one called Laundry express, both within three hundred metres of Nguyễn Thiện Thuật, but neither publishes hours or prices, so you have to ask at the door. The only one that does publish full hours is Mean Clean at 172/14/3 Bạch Đằng, about 500 m out: Monday to Friday 08:00–20:00, Saturday 09:00–18:00, and Sunday only 09:00–12:00. That Sunday cut-off is the easiest one to miss, since most people gather their washing at the weekend. If you are staying north of the city, Mia Laundry is about 4.3 km from here and tagged 24/7 on the open map, though that is a data tag rather than a sign on the door. Ask two things when you hand it over: whether it is priced by weight or by item, and when it will be ready.
