Institute of Oceanography Nha Trang

The Institute of Oceanography sits at 1 Cau Da, right by the island ferry pier. It's a working research institute dating to the French era, and the part open to visitors holds Vietnam's largest marine collection: thousands of preserved specimens, a large whale skeleton, and tanks of live sea life.

Its real value is that it doesn't depend on the weather. On a rough-sea day when every island tour is cancelled, this saves the morning, and being next to Cau Da pier, you can get here the moment you learn the boats aren't running.

Tickets are 10,000–40,000₫, open 8:00–18:00. The cheapest indoor attraction in Nha Trang. Allow an hour and a half to two hours: the preserved-specimen collection and the whale skeleton take the longest, while the live tanks go faster.

Its practical strength is the location: 1 Cau Da, right beside the pier for the islands. So on a day when you reach the pier and learn the boats are not running, the morning is not lost. This is a few minutes' walk away. It and VinWonders are the two rough-sea fallbacks, but this one is far cheaper and does not need a whole day.
