Diving at Hon Mun Nha Trang

You cannot dive at Hòn Mun. The Nha Trang Bay management board halted “swimming and diving at every dive point around Hòn Mun island” on 27 June 2022, and as of July 2026 it had not reopened. This page keeps its old address because “diving at Hòn Mun” is what people search for — but the answer to it, as things stand today, is no.

The permitted places are elsewhere in the same bay. In June 2024 Khánh Hoà approved a trial of recreational diving at four areas: north of Hòn Rùa, the artificial reef off Vĩnh Hoà, north-east of Trí Nguyên island, and the water between Bãi Tranh and Bãi Sỏi. The trial runs a year from the date operators are licensed, after which the province reassesses — so this is a list with an expiry date, not a permanent rule.

Why it closed: typhoon No. 9 in December 2021 tore up the western and north-western reef, and a bleaching event followed. Reef-building hard coral grows about a centimetre a year, so this is not something that comes back in a season. Surveys in late 2022 and March 2023 found live coral cover on the north and south-west of the island at about 74.5% — the closure is working, which is also why nobody is in a hurry to lift it.

The question to put to a seller, and it replaces all the others: where exactly do guests get into the water. A programme printing the name Hòn Mun tells you nothing by itself, since boats passing through that water are not covered by the suspension. What you need is the spot where people go in. If the seller cannot answer with a specific name, that is your answer.
