Overview

Hon Ro market sits in south Nha Trang, about 4 km from the square, right beside the fishing port. The sign at the gate says exactly what it is: the Hon Ro fishing port and the south-central seafood market. Which means most of the province's catch comes through here first and only then spreads out to the city's markets and kitchens.

This site used to point at the seafood section of Cho Dam as the place to buy, and that is only half right. Cho Dam is strong on dried goods, things to take home and being easy to reach. The fresh catch straight off the boats is at Hon Ro, and the prices differ because this is a wholesale place before it is a retail one.

The hour decides everything. The port comes alive around 2–3 in the morning as the boats come in and the fish is sorted and iced for the traders; between 4:00 and 7:00 is the busiest and best-stocked window. Maps lists the market as open from about 4:00 until nearly 19:00, but by the afternoon most of the fresh catch has already gone.

Know what you are walking into: this is a working fishing port, not a sight. The floor is wet, the smell of fish is strong, handcarts and porters move through constantly, and nobody here has time to explain things to a visitor. Wear closed shoes and clothes you don't mind, ask the per-kilo price before anything is weighed, and bring small notes. If you want a place with tables and chairs, this is not it. Buying here and having a restaurant in town cook it is what plenty of people do.

The other market: Đầm market. For seafood already cooked, see Mộc Quán and Thanh Sương.

Frequently asked

Hon Ro or Cho Dam for seafood?

Hon Ro for the catch straight off the boats at close to wholesale prices, if you can go early and accept the atmosphere of a working port. Cho Dam is easier to reach and better for dried goods and things to take home.

What time should you arrive?

Between about 4:00 and 7:00. The port starts work at 2–3 in the morning, and by the afternoon most of the fresh catch has been moved on.

Can you have your seafood cooked at the market?

This is a market beside a port, not a place with tables. The usual way is to buy here and take it to a restaurant in town that will cook it.
