Overview

If you have one morning in Nha Trang and want a genuinely good cup, go to Anh Coffee Roasters at 140 Hoang Hoa Tham. It is small, roasts its own, names the varietal and the growing region on the board, and opens at 5:30: before first light. Order the espresso tonic, or the cold brew if they are pouring Ethiopian beans that day. Skip the latte and the cà phê sữa: the milk drinks here are made with a light hand and taste thin to anyone used to the sweet Vietnamese style. For that, order the phin. Two things to plan around: the seats go by mid-morning, and it shuts at 17:30.

The other two roasters answer different needs. Minimal Coffee Roasters at 58 Dinh Tien Hoang is a takeaway stop: small, tidy, open at 6:00, ordinary prices, quick and sure-handed. Somewhere to catch before work rather than to settle into. Alam Coffee Roastery, on the Sinh Trung – Thong Nhat corner, is the opposite: it takes most of a building, walls in deep red, windows on all four sides so the sea breeze runs through and no air conditioning is needed. It is the best room on this list for working in a group or studying. Its one flaw is parking, which is tight when the place is busy.

For a longer sit at a proper table there are three more. Stockholm Bistro & Co-working is the quietest and runs to 23:00. It calls itself a workspace, but the kitchen is real: its sea bass beats plenty of restaurants, and in the evening the tables are candlelit, which turns it into a place to take someone. Nha He Coffee Shop sits above a ceramics shop at 120/8 Nguyen Thien Thuat, down a lane, so read the numbers; plenty of plants, an air-conditioned room and an outdoor deck, and the craft shop below is worth a look even if you drink nothing. Gióng Cafe is on the Hung Vuong – Tran Hung Dao corner, seven minutes' walk from 2/4 square, with its own cold room and a well-pulled espresso; against that, it prices well above its neighbours, and the outdoor half is too hot at midday.

Three of these are worth the trip for the food rather than the cup. Alpaca at 10/1B Nguyen Thien Thuat cooks European all day: chicken quesadillas, lasagna, gnocchi in tomato sauce, sourdough with cured salmon, and is one of the few places in the city that thinks about children, with its own kids' menu and toys to hand. The Cloud Bar at 163 Nguyen Thien Thuat should not be counted as a café at all: noon to 2am, strong on tuna bruschetta, salmon and avocado salad and shisha, a largely Russian room, and the most expensive address on any of these café pages. And four come with a caveat, high scores notwithstanding. P2 Café at 3 Hung Vuong puts expensive machines and grinders where you cannot miss them, yet the cup does not always live up to the hardware: and it serves drink-in customers in paper cups, which a shop placing itself in that bracket should not do. CAFE DEP, on the Nguyen Thien Thuat – Nguyen Thi Minh Khai corner, has four floors and a genuinely good view over the street in late afternoon, but its milk tea is pre-mixed with no sweetness to adjust, and although the sign says midnight, by about 22:30 the clearing-up has begun. Koi Garden Cafe is far out and coffee is not its strength. You go for the koi you can feed, the pool and the full-size helicopter model, which is to say you go with children. Jungle Coffee at 8 Le Quy Don is genuinely pretty, with private corners, and pretty is mostly what it is.

    European food all day at 10/1B Nguyen Thien Thuat, in the middle of the tourist quarter. Calling it a café undersells it. Order the chicken quesadilla, the lasagna, or the sourdough with cured salmon; the gnocchi in tomato sauce is good too. This is one of very few places in the city that thinks about children: its own kids' menu, toys to hand, and staff who watch the tables with small ones. There is coffee, there are cocktails and a wine list, so lunch stretches easily into the afternoon. Shuts 21:30.

The name promises live music and in the evening it delivers, but the room is the more memorable part: baskets of shells and starfish from the door inwards, and an artificial waterfall running inside. It is not loud and the music is well chosen. You can hold a conversation. It opens at 6:30 so mornings work, but if the music is the point it has to be evening; the place closes at 22:00.

This is a café of set dressing: several differently styled areas in one room, and they change the decor with the season, so a return visit looks different. It is at its best in the evening when the warm lights come on. Order the coconut-milk coffee or the matcha, and say how sweet you want it. They will make it that way. Most of the good seating is outdoors, so rain costs you half the café. Open 7:30–22:00.

The sea bass beats plenty of restaurants in town, and the pizza and matcha latte hold up. In the evening the tables are set with candles and roses, so the same address serves for a working day and for taking someone out.

    3 Hung Vuong, on a main road, two floors, with someone to park your bike: the easiest arrival here. It displays a La Marzocco and a row of Mazzer grinders, roasts on site and sells beans, and the design is pared back and smart. The cup does not always match the hardware, though: the americano does not live up to the hardware, and an iced black sometimes arrives as phin coffee. They also serve drink-in customers in paper cups. Large, cool, good music, 55,000–60,000₫ a drink, worth it for the room.

The café floor is not large but is thick with plants, with an air-conditioned room and an outdoor deck, quiet enough to open a laptop. There is a cat. The drinks are decent rather than remarkable, the matcha latte is the safest order, the cakes vary by day. 50,000–60,000₫.

The room is modern Vietnamese with coffee on display, its own cold room and an outdoor area that warms up nicely at night. The espresso and americano are well made, and the salted-egg croissant is crisp and generously filled. Two things first: at 70,000–90,000₫ a drink it prices well above its neighbours, and the outdoor half is hot at midday. Sit inside.

You come for the outlook: from the upper floors you look down on a busy stretch, close to the sea and to Xom Moi market, and late afternoon is the hour. The sign says midnight: the latest of the city's genuine cafés, but by about 22:30 the clearing-up tends to have started. Order coffee, not milk tea: the milk tea is pre-mixed, so there is no sweetness to adjust.

One practical note: it closes at 2 and does not always say so in advance, so if you arrive at one in the morning, ask.

In fairness, though: what it has is mostly the look. The drinks are decent, prices sit a little above the neighbourhood, and you can ask for less sugar.

Two things to plan around: one person runs the bar, so a weekend cup takes a while, and it shuts at 18:00. This is a morning and early-afternoon place. Prices sit slightly above the street, and earn it.
