Overview

Nha Trang has enough vegetarian kitchens to eat three meals a day. Two very different groups use them: visitors who eat vegetarian or vegan all the time, and the whole city on the new moon and full moon. On those two days every vegetarian place is busy, the small ones included. If your visit falls on one, go early or shift your hours.

Know one thing first: "chay" in Vietnam is not automatically vegan. Buddhist vegetarian normally excludes meat, fish and the pungent alliums, but may include egg and dairy. Araham's extras board lists fried and boiled eggs plainly. If you are vegan, say so before ordering. At the other end, Bồ Đề Sao calls itself a fully plant-based kitchen, and Quán Chay Ngon prints "VEGAN FOOD" on its menu. At those two you can order anything on the list.

Price falls into three clear tiers. Cheapest is Quán Chay Ngon at 147 Văn Tiến Dũng: a bowl of bánh canh 30,000₫, pho and noodles 35,000–40,000, bún 40,000, rice plates 35,000–50,000, and hotpot by the head: 160,000₫ for two, 320,000₫ for four. A step up is Yên Chay & Yoga at 46/9 Lê Thánh Tôn, mains 50,000–65,000₫, with a full English translation for every dish. Araham works mainly as a hotpot house, its add-ons running from 7,000₫ for bread to 59,000₫ for a plate of mushrooms. These figures come off the venues' own boards, so treat them as indicative and ask when you order. Quán Chay Ngon's menu also notes that prices exclude VAT.

For a plated meal rather than a bowl, there are two. Tuệ Nguyên at 12C đường 23 Tháng 10 plates like a restaurant: fried rice served in a pineapple, a platter of vegan "sashimi" laid on a wooden boat, stir-fried noodles, clay-pot hotpot, lanterns across the room. Senta Vegetarian at 11 Yersin is the most carefully made room of the six: a yellow dining room hung with conical hats, a back garden strung with red lanterns. Its kitchen turns out curry in a coconut and vegan bánh xèo. Both suit taking along someone who does not eat vegetarian.

On hours, four open between 06:30 and 07:00, so a vegetarian breakfast is possible. Bồ Đề Sao opens earliest at 06:30, and it is also the only one with a tray-service buffet counter plus a shop selling dried vegan goods to take away. At the other end most close around 20:00–21:00, so vegetarian is not the answer for a late dinner. Senta running to 22:00 is the exception. Quán Chay Ngon shuts between 13:00 and 16:00.

Location splits in two. Senta at 11 Yersin and Yên at 46/9 Lê Thánh Tôn are walkable from the central hotels. Araham out at Gò Găng, Tuệ Nguyên and Quán Chay Ngon are 2–6 km west and south, and need transport. With one meal and a bed near the beach, take one of the first two.

It is also the most carefully made room: a yellow dining room hung with conical hats and paper parasols, mosaic-topped tables, a back garden strung with red lanterns under the trees. The kitchen does curry in a coconut, vegan bánh xèo, artichoke hotpot and fried rice in a pineapple. Plated food, not a rice tray. It suits bringing along someone who does not eat vegetarian.

It plates like a restaurant: a platter of vegan "sashimi" laid on a wooden boat, fried rice in a pineapple, stir-fried noodles, clay-pot hotpot, white and red lanterns across the room. Opening at 06:30 makes breakfast possible, and on đường 23 Tháng 10 it is easy to stop at on the way west. It is the most committed of the six to imitating meat dishes. If that is not what you want, choose Bồ Đề Sao or Quán Chay Ngon.

    11 Huỳnh Thúc Kháng, open 06:30–20:00, the earliest of the six. It is also the only one with a tray-service buffet counter: a run of steel trays of stir-fries, braises and soups you choose from and pay for. A canteen, not a restaurant. It calls itself a fully plant-based kitchen, so nothing on the counter carries egg or dairy. Inside there is also a shop of jarred dried vegan goods to take away, and the frontage is buried in plants. This is the one for a quick, cheap, filling lunch rather than a meal you host.

Bread 7,000₫, bún 10,000, noodles 15,000, a bowl of rice 10,000, tofu 20,000, garlic bread 40,000, hotpot vegetables 39,000, mushrooms 59,000. A note for vegans: that same board lists fried and boiled eggs at 10,000₫. Say so before ordering if you do not eat them. A large two-floor room with wooden chairs, full on weekend evenings.

    46/9 Lê Thánh Tôn, up a lane in the middle of town, walkable from most quarter hotels. A neon sign reading "vegetarian restaurant and yoga", a yellow room with lotus murals and patterned tile floors. Its strongest point is an English translation for every dish, with clear prices: braises 50,000–65,000₫, noodle dishes 50,000–65,000, rice plates 50,000–65,000 (brown rice with lotus seeds, seaweed rice, mushroom fried rice), extra white rice 15,000. For a foreign visitor eating vegetarian, this is the easiest menu of the six to order from.

    147 Văn Tiến Dũng in VCN Phước Hải. It is the cheapest of the six, and its menu prints "VEGAN FOOD" outright, so there is no need to ask about egg or dairy. From the board: bánh canh 30,000₫, vegan pho 35,000 with the other pho at 40,000, noodles 35,000–40,000, bún 40,000, rice with vegan ribs or mixed rice 35,000, vegan chicken rice 50,000. Hotpot is by the head: 160,000₫ for two, 240,000₫ for three, 320,000₫ for four. Salads 50,000 or 80,000. One line on the menu is worth reading: prices exclude VAT. It closes between 13:00 and 16:00, so not mid-afternoon.

Addresses come from each shop's own Google Maps listing, and the Open map button opens that shop's pin rather than running a search. 18 shops on the site have no listing we could confirm, so they have no button: the address lookup returned a different business, and a button that points at the wrong place is worse than none.
