Overview

Chinese food in Nha Trang splits cleanly in two, and the two halves do not even keep the same hours. Dim sum is breakfast: Cheng An on Bạch Đằng and CAO DIMSUM on Lê Thánh Tôn both open at six in the morning, the same hour as the local noodle shops. Hotpot is dinner: Gang Yu Hot Pot on Hồng Bàng and Lẩu QINYUAN on Nguyễn Thiện Thuật open at 11:00 and run to 23:00. Turn up in the wrong half of the day and you find a shutter, which is the commonest mistake people make with Chinese food here.

Cheng An Dimsum is the big name in the first half: the branch at 132 Bạch Đằng opens at 06:00, while the one at 35/1 Nguyễn Thiện Thuật opens later and shuts in the afternoon. Two addresses, one brand. Check the pin, they are two hundred metres apart and keep completely different hours. The Bạch Đằng branch's menu gives a few prices: cucumber salad 35,000₫, three vegetables in mushroom sauce 89,000₫, sautéed mushrooms 95,000₫.

The other half is hotpot, led by Gang Yu Hot Pot (港渝火锅) at 88 Hồng Bàng: "since 2015" on the sign and a frontage hung with red lanterns. The name says Chongqing, so the broth is the numbing-hot kind rather than the mild one. Lẩu QINYUAN at 158 Nguyễn Thiện Thuật is the second, with private round-table rooms for a group. Both run to 23:00.

One place belongs to neither half and resembles nothing else here: Steam n' Spice inside the Sheraton at 26-28 Trần Phú. A Cantonese restaurant, open 11:00–14:00 and 17:00–21:00. It is the most expensive entry on this page and the only one you reach through a hotel lobby. If you want dim sum in air conditioning with linen napkins, that is the address; if you want it at six in the morning on a plastic stool, Cheng An or CAO.

Two noodle shops are worth knowing because they are what survives of an older Nha Trang. Sanh Ký Mì Gia at 39 Thống Nhất sells Chinese-style noodles, and its hours say plainly that it is a family shop rather than a restaurant: 06:00–09:30, then 15:00–21:00, closed right through the middle of the day. The cart out front still carries its name in Chinese characters. Phúc Miêu has two addresses: 93 Trịnh Phong in town and one out at Thủy Xương, 2.6 km from the centre, serving dim sum and tea until 22:00.

On location: eight of the eleven sit within a kilometre of the 2/4 square, and the densest cluster is Bạch Đằng and Trịnh Phong, where Cheng An, Phúc Miêu and Doo Doo are a few hundred metres apart. The outliers are Phúc Miêu's Thủy Xương branch (2.6 km) and Sanh Ký (1.6 km). There is no Chinese restaurant in the north of the city or out at Bãi Dài.

    At 101 Trịnh Phong, a few dozen metres from Phúc Miêu. It opens at 09:00: later than the early dim sum houses, earlier than the hotpots, filling the gap between them. Tables here are usually covered in steamer baskets, so ordering for a group is the normal way.

Addresses come from each shop's own Google Maps listing, and the Open map button opens that shop's pin rather than running a search. 18 shops on the site have no listing we could confirm, so they have no button: the address lookup returned a different business, and a button that points at the wrong place is worse than none. Street-food stalls change hours and close without telling anyone; call ahead if you are travelling across town.
