Overview

Grilling here splits into two ways of paying, and knowing which is which saves an argument at the till. Buffet means one price whatever you order: Gajok BBQ at 10 Huỳnh Thúc Kháng prints 229,000₫ an adult and 119,000₫ for a child between 1m and 1m3, covering striploin, beef ribs, short plate, pork cheek, cheese chicken, basa, Thai-style prawns, pasta, Korean beef vermicelli and two hotpots. À la carte works out cheaper for a small table: at Ba Lợi a plate of fried noodles is 79,000–169,000₫ depending on what is in it, and a pigeon and mushroom hotpot at Phú Nông is 320,000₫ for the whole pot.

Hours are where an evening most often goes wrong. Four of the eleven open only from the afternoon, and the two latest openers among them also close early: Grill Garden 2 from 17:00 and Gajok from 16:30, both done at 22:00. By contrast Quán nướng Ba Lợi at 129 Huỳnh Thúc Kháng lists itself as open around the clock, the only one here with no closing time. If you are eating after nine, the real list is three names: Ba Lợi, Ong Grill & Chill until midnight, then Kuken 79 until 23:00.

The equipment differs too, and it shapes the evening more than the name does. Bò Vui at 18 Trần Hưng Đạo is the Korean indoor kind: a round grill sunk into the table, an extraction pipe dropped from the ceiling over every seat, and a help-yourself dessert fridge. Clean, and you leave without the smoke in your clothes. Nướng Ngói Kuken 79 does exactly what its name says: a roof tile set over a small charcoal burner, the meat cooking on the tile rather than a grate, which is how it is done in Bình Định. Dream House in Vĩnh Hiệp puts long wooden benches on grass under strings of lights, with a separate charcoal burner per table. Those are three quite different nights out.

Two of these are not really grill houses, which is worth knowing before you book. Làng nướng Phú Nông out at Cầu Dứa is in fact a pigeon restaurant: its bilingual menu runs 95,000–320,000₫, from a plate of stir-fried pigeon to a pigeon and mushroom hotpot. Tiệm Lẩu Nướng của Mị at 19 Trịnh Phong builds its menu around squid hotpot from Đại Lãnh, 249,000–339,000₫ a pot, with the lunch card about thirty thousand cheaper.

On getting there: seven are within walking distance or a short ride of the centre. Trần Hưng Đạo, Huỳnh Thúc Kháng (two), Trịnh Phong, Võ Trứ, Trần Phú and Biệt Thự. The other four need transport: Dream House and Làng nướng Phú Nông lie 5–6 km west of the tourist quarter, Kuken 79 is about 7 km north in the Hòn Sện area, and Ong Grill & Chill is south in the Thái Hưng development. In return, the two western ones are the only places here where you sit outdoors in open country rather than in a street.

BBQ Ỉn Ơi sits inside the Xóm Mới Garden complex at 144 Võ Trứ, so you walk into a multi-stall food yard before you reach its counter. That yard is covered on the squid banh xeo page. If you want something else: small plates and a long sit is the snail places; eating in a garden on the edge of town is countryside drinking houses; and picking seafood from a tank is seafood and draught beer.

18 Tran Hung Dao, Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.9 Google · 1,969 reviews

18 Trần Hưng Đạo, right in the central cluster. Korean-style and indoors: round grills sunk into the tables, an extraction pipe over every seat, air conditioning so you do not carry the smoke home. The marinated meat arrives on steel trays, and there is a help-yourself dessert and cake fridge at the back. It posts no opening hours on Maps, so call ahead if you are going early or late.

  • Vườn Nướng Grill Garden 2

    Open map

86C Tran Phu, Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.3 Google · 1,372 reviewsOpen 17:00 – 22:00

86C Trần Phú, open 17:00–22:00. An open-air grill buffet at the southern end of the beach road, and the largest grill buffet here. An open charcoal pit by the entrance turns a whole pig and large squid, while the buffet itself is trays of oysters, prawns, meat and vegetables you carry to your own table grill. It fills the moment it opens and shuts firmly at 22:00, so 17:30–18:00 is the time to arrive. The buffet price is not published on Maps; ask when you book.

  • Vườn Nướng Grill Garden 3

    Open map

21 Biet Thu, P. Nha Trang (Loc Tho former), Khanh Hoa

21 Biệt Thự. The same chain as Grill Garden 2 at 86C Trần Phú, about 700 m away, but this is the branch inside the backpacker quarter rather than out on the beach road. The chain has two Nha Trang branches and both do a grill buffet. Its hours could not be verified, and nor could a price board: a booking site lists the chain at 250,000–300,000₫ a head, but that is the booking site's number rather than a board on the wall. Call 0931 006 005 first, not least because the chain sometimes has one of the two branches closed.

  • Quán nướng Ba Lợi

129 Huynh Thuc Khang, Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.5 Google · 1,075 reviews79,000 – 169,000₫

129 Huỳnh Thúc Kháng. Maps lists it as always open, the only one here with no closing time. A big green neon front, long banquet tables inside, and a kitchen that does seafood as well as grilling: crab, prawns, razor clams, fried corn. Its bilingual menu carries prices: fried noodles with mustard greens or glass noodles with vegetables 79,000₫, either with beef or seafood 119,000–139,000, crispy fried noodles 169,000. It is a big room, better for a group than for two.

  • BBQ Ỉn Ơi

144 Vo Tru, inside Xom Moi Garden, Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.9 Google · 560 reviewsOpen 10:30 – 22:00

144 Võ Trứ, open 10:30–22:00. It sits inside the Xóm Mới Garden food yard, so you go through the yard gate and then look for the counter. The dish is smoked pork ribs carved at the table with herbs, rice paper, rice or noodles and kimchi. Slow-smoked barbecue rather than a table grill, so nobody has to turn the meat.

The bilingual buffet card lists striploin in spicy or chilli-salt marinade, beef ribs, short plate, pork cheek, spicy cheese chicken, basa, Thai-style prawns, chicken salad, prawn pasta, Thai-spiced ribs, Korean beef vermicelli and tuna belly, plus kimchi and tom yum hotpots. Two floors with a balcony over the street; busiest around seven.

To 10, Vinh Chau hamlet, P. Tay Nha Trang (Vinh Hiep former), Khanh Hoa

    4.5 Google · 242 reviewsOpen 16:00 – 22:00

Vĩnh Châu hamlet in Vĩnh Hiệp, about 6 km west of the tourist quarter, open 16:00–22:00. It is built on a patch of grass beside the railway: long wooden benches, a stone gateway, strings of lights, and a separate charcoal burner carried to each table. The grill is seafood and meat together. Oysters, prawns, pork belly, corn. Arrive at dusk and you get the sunset over the fields; arrive at midday and there is no shade. Rain takes away the best part of it.

19 Trinh Phong, Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.6 Google · 199 reviewsOpen 10:30 – 22:00129,000 – 339,000₫

19 Trịnh Phong, open 10:30–22:00. The name says grill but the dish is squid hotpot from Đại Lãnh: 249,000–339,000₫ a pot by size on the main card, and cheaper at lunch, 219,000–309,000. Everything besides the hotpot sits between 129,000 and 269,000₫. The squid comes whole, thin and translucent. That is the thing to order.

    4.0 Google · 220 reviewsOpen 10:00 – 22:0095,000 – 320,000₫

10B Cầu Dứa – Phú Nông, some 6 km west of the centre, open 10:00–22:00. Thatched roofs, wooden tables, trees in the yard, and a kitchen built on pigeon rather than ordinary grilled meat. The bilingual menu runs from 95,000₫ for a plate of stir-fried pigeon to 320,000₫ for a pigeon and mushroom hotpot. It is a big room, better suited to a large lunch than to dinner for two.

54 Nguyen Du, Hon Sen, northern Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.1 Google · 158 reviewsOpen 15:00 – 23:00

54 Nguyễn Dữ in Hòn Sện, about 7 km north of the centre, open 15:00–23:00. The latest here apart from Ba Lợi. It grills the Bình Định way: a roof tile is set over a small charcoal burner and brought to the table, and the meat cooks on the tile. Besides the grill there is hotpot, salads and fried chicken. A pavement place with tables out to the kerb, busy at weekends.

  • Ong Grill & Chill

    Open map

Gate 2, street 35, Thai Hung urban area, south Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    Open 10:00 – 0:00

Gate 2, street 35, Thái Hưng urban area, in the south of the city, open 10:00 until midnight. That is later than anything else here except Ba Lợi, which lists no closing time at all. A garden with outdoor tables laid out for groups, and it files itself as a drinking place rather than a restaurant. It is one of three ONG Group venues; the other two share a single address at 96 Trần Phú. This branch's own menu is readable in full and runs 80,000–400,000₫ a dish: grilled pork belly in salt and chilli 80,000₫, pork neck in fermented bean curd 90,000₫, beef and mushroom rolls 130,000₫, fried rice 150,000₫, BBQ beef fillet and squid in satay 170,000₫, grilled sturgeon 255,000₫, pomfret steamed in foil 400,000₫. Call 035 979 7588. Being south of the city, it needs a vehicle.

Addresses come from each shop's own Google Maps listing, and the Open map button opens that shop's pin rather than running a search. 18 shops on the site have no listing we could confirm, so they have no button: the address lookup returned a different business, and a button that points at the wrong place is worse than none. A Google score appears only when Maps carries both the score and the number of reviews — a bare average cannot be weighed, so this page leaves it out. Street-food stalls change hours and close without telling anyone; call ahead if you are travelling across town.

What to order

  • Gajok BBQ prints its buffet: 229,000₫ an adult, 119,000₫ for a child 1m–1m3
  • Bò Vui has sunken grills and an extractor over each seat, no smoke in your clothes
  • Bình Định-style tile grilling: the meat cooks on a roof tile over charcoal
  • Ba Lợi lists itself as open around the clock, the only one here with no closing time

Practical tips

  • For two, à la carte beats the buffet; from four people up, the buffet earns its price
  • Grill Garden 2 and Gajok shut at 22:00, do not pick either for a late dinner
  • Làng nướng Phú Nông is a pigeon restaurant, not an ordinary grill
  • Dream House and Phú Nông are open-air, rain ruins the evening, so check the forecast

Frequently asked

What does a grill buffet cost per person in Nha Trang?

Only Gajok BBQ at 10 Huỳnh Thúc Kháng posts a price: 229,000₫ an adult and 119,000₫ for a child between 1m and 1m3, covering both the grill and two hotpots. The two Vườn Nướng Grill Garden branches, 86C Trần Phú and 21 Biệt Thự, are also buffets but publish no board on Maps; a booking site lists the chain at 250,000–300,000₫ a head, which is the booking site's figure rather than the shop's.

Which grill houses are open late?

Quán nướng Ba Lợi at 129 Huỳnh Thúc Kháng lists itself as open around the clock. Ong Grill & Chill in the Thái Hưng development closes at midnight, while Nướng Ngói Kuken 79 in Hòn Sện closes at 23:00. Six shut at 22:00, and two publish no hours.

What is tile grilling?

Instead of a metal grate, the shop lays a fired clay roof tile over a small charcoal burner and cooks the meat on the tile. The tile holds an even heat and the meat never touches the flame, so it scorches less. In Nha Trang, Nướng Ngói Kuken 79 does it this way.
