Overview

Broken rice is a Saigon dish, and in Nha Trang it is a working lunch rather than a specialty to hunt down. That has an upside: real prices, real shops, and a plate of rice with grilled pork and a fried egg can cost 25,000₫. It also means the quality varies widely between shops, and within one shop by the hour, so this page is written around the decision you actually make: what that money buys.

Two I would go to first. Cơm tấm 603 at 603 Đường 2/4 marinates its pork with honey, a taste nothing else on this page has; the mixed plate is 35,000₫ with a bowl of soup, and the steamed egg loaf is worth adding. The shop at 30 Mac Dinh Chi has been going twenty years. The sign still carries its old street name, Le Dai Hanh, because it moved and kept the name; the grilled pork and chicken run salty and a little dry, but ribs, shredded pork skin, egg loaf, a grilled wing and a bowl of soup come to 60,000₫.

If you want to see actual charcoal, Cơm tấm Mắm Kẹo at 6 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai: the grill sits out front, you smell it from down the street, the meat is tender and well seasoned, and as the name says, the fish sauce is what they get right. It is a pavement shop, busy at midday. One thing to know before you pay: a box to go costs more than the 40,000₫ eat-in plate. Ask the price before you order it that way.

The floor is 25,000₫, and two shops sit there. Quán Tú at 169 Da Tuong, on the crossroads, does rice with grilled pork, a fried egg and soup for exactly that. The meat is sliced thin and is not tender, the egg is cooked right through with no soft yolk, the room is cramped, but at that price there is nothing to complain about. Cơm tấm Núi 1 at 58 Nui Mot is also 25,000₫ for a generous plate, with the soup changing daily. Nui Mot runs hot and cold by the hour, so go in the middle of the lunch rush while the grill is still on.

The last two, each for a reason. Cơm Tấm Trống Đồng at 100 Đường 23 Tháng 10 is the busiest shop here: five wooden tables, heavily marinated ribs over charcoal, good shredded pork skin, rice neatly moulded, though the smoke does not come through as much as the smell promises. Cơm Tấm Mộc Lan at 26 Ly Tu Trong has one difference worth knowing in advance: the meat is cooked in an air fryer rather than over charcoal, so if you came for the smoke this is not it; in exchange the shop is clean and easy to find on the main street, service is quick and the iced tea is free. The 50,000₫ rib-on-the-bone plate is the one to order.

The other rice plate: cơm gà. Other quick meals: bánh mì and bánh mì with xíu mại.

Some shops, with addresses

  • Cơm tấm 603

603 2/4, Bac Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.6 Google · 49 reviewsOpen 9:00 – 23:0035,000 – 50,000₫

At 603 Đường 2/4 in the north of the city, long established and mostly serving the neighbourhood. The pork is marinated with honey. That is the flavour that sets it apart, and the reason it leads this list. The 35,000₫ mixed plate carries grilled ribs, grilled pork patty, a fried egg and some egg loaf, with a bowl of soup; add the steamed egg loaf. The shop is small and car parking is tight, so a motorbike is easier. A box to go costs more than the eat-in plate, so ask first.

  • Cơm tấm Lê Đại Hành

30 Mac Dinh Chi, Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.5 Google · 52 reviewsOpen 8:00 – 21:0030,000 – 60,000₫

Twenty years in business, and the sign still says Le Dai Hanh although the shop has moved to 30 Mac Dinh Chi: go by the new address. Clean, airy, 30,000–40,000₫ a plate; ribs, pork skin and egg loaf with a grilled chicken wing and a bowl of vegetable soup comes to 60,000₫. The pork and chicken are seasoned strongly, say something if you eat light. The owner is generous with extras.

6 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.1 Google · 140 reviewsOpen 6:00 – 22:0040,000 – 60,000₫

At 6 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, a pavement shop with the grill set up out front: you smell the pork from down the street. The meat is tender and well seasoned and, as the name says, the fish sauce is what they get right. Busy at midday, and regulars get their pickles on the side. About 40,000₫ a plate, and a box to go costs more, ask before you order it that way.

  • Cơm Tấm Trống Đồng

100 23 Thang 10, Tay Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.2 Google · 567 reviewsOpen 9:30 – 19:30

At 100 Đường 23 Tháng 10, and the busiest shop on this page. Five solid wooden tables, clean enough. The ribs are heavily marinated and grilled over charcoal, the shredded pork skin is good, and the rice is neatly moulded onto the plate, though the smoke comes through more faintly in the meat than the smell out front promises. If you cannot eat chilli, say so to the person serving: the shop has explained that an online order's note sits outside where they look. Closed on Thursdays.

142 Nguyen Dinh Chieu, Bac Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.6 Google · 141 reviewsOpen 9:00 – 20:00from 30,000₫

At 142 Nguyen Dinh Chieu in the north, a big airy room that gets hot at midday. This is the most food for the least money: the 30,000₫ mixed plate fills you, extra rice is free, and a 5,000₫ bowl of bitter-melon soup finishes the meal. The grilled ribs are well seasoned and tender, and beyond broken rice the shop does grilled-pork noodles in a strong broth.

26 Ly Tu Trong, Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.3 Google · 34 reviewsOpen 6:00 – 22:0050,000 – 90,000₫

At 26 Ly Tu Trong on the main street, clean and quick, with free iced tea. One difference worth knowing first: the meat here is cooked in an air fryer rather than over charcoal, so there is no smoke. If that is what you came for, pick another shop on this page. The 50,000₫ rib-on-the-bone plate is the one to order and the marinade is good; add grilled belly, braised pork, shredded skin and egg loaf with a bowl of soup and it comes to about 90,000₫. Very busy at lunch.

  • Cơm tấm Núi Một

58 Nui Mot, Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.4 Google · 74 reviewsOpen 10:00 – 14:0025,000 – 50,000₫

At 58 Nui Mot, 25,000₫ a plate with generous rice, the soup changing daily, and iced tea and rice crackers on the table. It sits down a lane and serves the neighbourhood. It runs hot and cold by the hour, so go in the middle of the lunch rush while the grill is still on; the 25,000₫ plate with ribs is the better order than the 50,000₫ mixed one.

  • Cơm sườn trứng Tú

    Open map

169 Da Tuong, Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa

    4.4 Google · 50 reviewsOpen 6:00 – 14:00from 25,000₫

At 169 Da Tuong, right on the crossroads and easy to find; the room is small and tight. Rice with grilled pork, a fried egg and soup is exactly 25,000₫, and a drink is 10,000₫: these are neighbourhood prices, not visitor prices. The meat is sliced thin and well seasoned, and the egg is cooked right through, about what 25,000₫ buys. If you order the grilled-pork noodles, say you do not want the meat juice poured over unless that is what you are used to. It opens at 6am and closes on Sundays.

Addresses come from each shop's own Google Maps listing, and the Open map button opens that shop's pin rather than running a search. 18 shops on the site have no listing we could confirm, so they have no button: the address lookup returned a different business, and a button that points at the wrong place is worse than none. A Google score appears only when Maps carries both the score and the number of reviews — a bare average cannot be weighed, so this page leaves it out. Street-food stalls change hours and close without telling anyone; call ahead if you are travelling across town.

Frequently asked

What does broken rice cost in Nha Trang?

The floor is 25,000₫ for rice, grilled pork, a fried egg and soup, at Quán Tú on Da Tuong and at Nui Mot. The usual range is 30,000–40,000₫, and the 50,000₫ rib plate at Mộc Lan is the top of this page. Some shops charge more for takeaway than for eating in, so ask.

Which shops actually use charcoal?

Mắm Kẹo on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai keeps its charcoal grill out front, and Trống Đồng on Đường 23 Tháng 10 also grills over coals. Mộc Lan, by contrast, uses an air fryer. The shop says so plainly, so pick another address here if smoke is what you want.

Can you eat broken rice for breakfast?

You can, but at few places. Most shops here work around lunchtime; each one's hours are in the list below. For a breakfast you can count on, bún sứa or bánh căn are easier to find early.
