Beer in Nha Trang spans a sevenfold range, and both ends come from the shops' own boards. The cheapest is a 14,000₫ glass of bia hơi at Bia Hơi Hà Nội ONE, 124c Thích Quảng Đức. The same board offers a two-litre jug at 90,000₫, so drinking by the jug still beats drinking by the can. The dearest is a 100,000₫ pour of 7.5% hazy IPA on the chalkboard at The Junkyard, 33 Bạch Đằng. Same city, 3 km apart.

Four of these serve craft beer, and three pour things you cannot buy in a supermarket. The Junkyard chalks the whole list with its strengths, 70,000–100,000₫ a glass: cheapest is its own Go-Go Golden Ale at 4.1%, dearest the Juicy Lucy Hazy IPA at 7.5%. Craft Beer UB Eatrang at 47 Nguyễn Đức Cảnh keeps its fermenters in the room and sells by the two-litre tower, 147,000–197,000₫ for pale, red or dark. Jelly Brewpub at 46.4 Hùng Vương pours a flight of four to compare, and Men Tươi at 19 Trần Khánh Dư has a whole wall of bottles behind the bar.

One easy mistake, worth naming because it costs money: a "beer club" in Nha Trang is a nightclub, not a beer place. Loud music, a stage, laser lights, bottles and table minimums: that belongs with the bars and clubs, not here. If you want to sit and talk and pay by the glass, look for "quán bia", "bia hơi", "craft beer" or "brewpub" instead.

The hours differ enough to change an evening's plan. No. 02 Beer Pub at 2 Trịnh Phong opens at eight in the morning and runs to 23:30, and Lam Garden at 1A Lam Sơn from seven, the only two open all day. At the other end, Khô Bia at 359 đường 23 Tháng 10 and The Junkyard both close at 1am. And one thing to check before setting out: The Junkyard is shut three days a week: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Open only from Friday evening through Monday.

The rooms differ more than the prices do, and they decide the evening. Khô Bia is a pavement shop in the full sense: red plastic stools out on đường 23 Tháng 10, an oil lamp on each table, Hà Nội beer packed in a foam box, and the tables spill across to the underside of the flyover opposite. Lam Garden sits under big trees in a yard hung with national flags and pours German Paderborner. Pallet Beer Station at 68A Bùi Thiện Ngộ has a saxophone and guitar most evenings. No. 02 is all neon and imports: Corona, Hoegaarden, Sapporo.

The food here is something to drink alongside rather than a dinner, and two boards at the shops say enough about the money: at Bia Hơi Hà Nội ONE a dish runs from 49,000₫ for fried rice to 199,000₫ for a hotpot, while at Jelly Brewpub the snacks sit inside 75,000–95,000₫. To eat properly, the snail places or seafood and draught beer suit better; here the beer is the point.

The thing to order is the flight of four, the beer names chalked on the paddle itself: Easy Summer, Amber, Onyx and one that rotates, the quickest way to find out what you like before committing. Snacks run 75,000–95,000₫ a plate, the cheapest being grilled octopus with chilli salt.

A pavement shop: red plastic stools on the kerb, an oil lamp on every table, Hà Nội beer packed in a foam box, and another row of tables under the flyover opposite. It is the most thoroughly pavement place here: cold beer, drinking food and a long evening, nothing else. There is a second branch in Vĩnh Điềm Trung.

It sells by the two-litre tower, priced on the menu: pale 147,000₫, red 177,000₫, dark 197,000₫, with wheat beer, ginseng beer and a passionfruit tower for anyone not drinking. A wide warehouse-like room with long tables, suited to a group, and it serves platters of food too.

A neon-lit pub: a red "COLD BEER" sign, licence plates and bric-a-brac on the walls, a fridge of imports: Corona, Hoegaarden, Sapporo, and a few taps. There are tables out on the pavement facing the street. It sits in the central cluster, walkable from most hotels.

Since it opens at seven it doubles as a shaded place to sit by day.

    68A Bùi Thiện Ngộ in the south of the city, open late afternoon to about 22:00. The smallest place here. A warm yellow "PALLET BEER STATION" sign, tables inside and out on the pavement, and on some evenings a saxophone and guitar playing in the corner. The kitchen does fish-sauce chicken, salmon, sea grapes and other things to pick at. It is new and little known, so there is usually a free table.

Addresses come from each shop's own Google Maps listing, and the Open map button opens that shop's pin rather than running a search. 18 shops on the site have no listing we could confirm, so they have no button: the address lookup returned a different business, and a button that points at the wrong place is worse than none.
