Overview

"Hiring a car in Nha Trang" covers three different services, and picking the wrong one wastes money. One: a car with a driver. You hire vehicle and driver together, by the trip or by the day, and it is much the commonest here. Two: self-drive. Far rarer, and it needs a licence valid in Vietnam. Three: a driver for your car. You have the vehicle but cannot drive it, so someone comes and drives yours. The three differ in price, in paperwork, and in who carries the risk.

A car with a driver is the default, and usually the right call for a foreign visitor. The reason is paperwork rather than comfort: a foreign licence only works here once converted or paired with a recognised international permit, and insurance follows that. Hire the driver with the car and none of it is your problem. The size depends on the group: four to seven seats for a family, sixteen for a crowd, and in Nha Trang the sixteen-seater is the one most often booked, because most of these trips run out of town: Dốc Lết, Yang Bay, Hòn Bà, Bãi Dài.

A driver for your own car is the least-known service here and the most worth knowing. The idea is simple: you have a car, you have been drinking or you are too tired, and they send someone to drive your car home. Xế Hộ 247 prints the pitch on its board: "you drink, I drive". Its rates go by distance: around 150,000₫ for 0–5 km, 200,000₫ for 5–10, 250,000₫ for 10–15, more beyond that, negotiated over 50 km. There is a surcharge after 23:00. E-Rent does the same through an app, its poster quoting 18,000₫ a kilometre. Both figures are indicative, read off their own boards.

If you genuinely want to drive yourself, three things come first. Check that your licence is usable in Vietnam. That is the step people skip, and the expensive one to skip. Ask exactly what the insurance covers and what the excess is. And photograph the whole car before you leave the yard, roof and bumpers included, the same habit that pays when hiring a motorbike. The coastal Nguyễn Tất Thành is easy driving. The city streets at going-home time are not, and they are full of motorbikes.

A cheaper route people rarely consider. For one long one-way leg, the airport or Dốc Lết or Bãi Dài, booking a single service run usually beats hiring for the day, and you are not paying for the hours the car sits waiting. The other way round, if your day has three or four stops, hiring by the day is what pays. Nobody publishes a rate for a car with a driver because it moves with the vehicle and the distance, so agree a whole-day price before you commit, and settle who pays for fuel and tolls while you are at it.

In the same family: the airport transfer, taxis and ride apps for short hops, and motorbike hire, far cheaper for one or two people.

The VCN building in Vĩnh Điềm Trung. It has the largest fleet on this page, running from sleeper coaches through 29-seaters to a 16-seat van, all lettered "New Life Travel Cars". This is the sort of operator that moves groups, so it suits a crowd or a full day out of the city. No published rate. Ring the number with your pickup, destination and headcount.

15a Nguyễn Thị Định in the south. A white Hyundai Solati van with fresh cream-and-orange seats and the small dashboard shrine that almost every service vehicle here carries. This size takes sixteen people with luggage, the right shape for a group heading to Dốc Lết or Yang Bay for the day.

477 đường 23 Tháng 10. A small operator working one size, with two-tone leather VIP seats with high headrests numbered to twelve, so fewer seats and more room. That suits a multi-generation family better than a large party. The van is kept in a yard behind the house, so ring first.

Not a place that rents cars but one that rents drivers. The board reads "you drink, I drive". You have a car, you have been drinking, and they send someone to take it home for you. The rates go by distance: about 150,000₫ for 0–5 km, 200,000₫ for 5–10, 250,000₫ for 10–15, negotiated above 50 km. There is a surcharge after 23:00 and a waiting fee. Its jobs land at night, around 21:15, 22:52, 00:23, which says exactly when this service lives.

23 Thái Nguyên. The same designated-driver service as Xế Hộ 247, but booked in an app rather than by phone, and its poster quotes 18,000₫ a kilometre, a different way of counting from the banded rates. The number above is a 1900 hotline. This page carries no picture of the firm: nothing could be found that says anything about the service, so the space is left empty.

61 Yết Kiêu. This is the only self-drive entry on this page, and the one to read most carefully: it presents manufacturer showrooms and a dealer's handover ceremony more than a rental fleet. So ask exactly which car you will actually get, what year, and what the insurance covers. Driving yourself here needs a licence valid in Vietnam. Check that before you leave a deposit.

Addresses come from each shop's own Google Maps listing, and the Open map button opens that shop's pin rather than running a search. 18 shops on the site have no listing we could confirm, so they have no button: the address lookup returned a different business, and a button that points at the wrong place is worse than none. A Google score appears only when Maps carries both the score and the number of reviews — a bare average cannot be weighed, so this page leaves it out. Street-food stalls change hours and close without telling anyone; call ahead if you are travelling across town.

Worth knowing before you go

  • Three services: a car with a driver, self-drive, and a driver for your own car
  • A designated driver from about 150,000₫ for a short run — for an evening with beer in it
  • The sixteen-seater is the size most often booked, because most trips run out of town
  • Self-drive needs a licence valid in Vietnam — check before booking

Practical tips

  • Agree a whole-day price, and settle who pays fuel and tolls
  • For one long one-way leg, a single booked run beats a full day
  • Self-drive: photograph the whole car before leaving the yard
  • If you have been drinking, call a designated driver; expect a surcharge after 23:00

Frequently asked

Can a foreigner drive a car in Vietnam?

Only if your licence is usable here: converted to a Vietnamese one, or an international permit of a kind Vietnam recognises. It is the step people skip, and insurance hangs off it. Which is why most foreign visitors in Nha Trang hire the driver with the car.

What is a designated driver service?

You have a car but cannot drive it, because you have been drinking or you are exhausted, and they send a driver to take your own car home. It is priced by distance, around 150,000₫ under 5 km on Xế Hộ 247's board, with a surcharge after 23:00. Indicative figures; confirm when you ring.

Is it cheaper to hire for the day or book each trip?

It depends on the day. One long one-way leg, the airport or Dốc Lết or Bãi Dài, is usually cheaper booked as a single run, because you are not paying for waiting time. A day with three or four stops is where hiring by the day pays.
