Overview

This is the layer visitors usually miss, because it is not on the beachfront: from around 15:00–17:00, carts and pavement stalls set up inland and run until about 22:00. Everything is priced per item, from 3,000₫ a skewer to 25,000₫ a serving.

Three things worth ordering. Skewers. Prawn, chicken, quail egg, rolled beef over charcoal with a tamarind dip, chosen one at a time so you can try several. Grilled rice paper. A sheet crisped over coals with egg, spring onion and dried beef, often called Vietnamese pizza, which is not a bad description. Rice-paper salad. Shredded sheets tossed with green mango, dried beef, quail eggs, herbs and shrimp paste.

Two clusters are dense: Bach Dang and the Mac Dinh Chi fork, a little over a kilometre apart, so an evening can take in both on foot. 23 Thang 10 has stalls too, but strung along nearly ten kilometres rather than gathered, so it is worth the trip only if you are already out that way. All of it is inland, one or two kilometres from Tran Phu beach, which is also why a snack here costs a fifth of what it does on the seafront.

This is where local students and young people eat, so plastic stools, standing room, cash. Most stalls have no English menu. Pointing is quickest. And because everything is grilled to order, choose a busy stall: skewers going out constantly are not sitting on the rack.

Those three dishes are the opening, not the whole of it. The same hours also cover Korean-style snacks: tokbokki, kimbap, fried chicken, which young people here eat quite as often as skewers; kem xôi, hot sticky rice under cold coconut ice cream, to finish on; and chè, the sweet served in a glass. The list at the foot of the page is ordered by that, not by score.

One thing about the hours: almost everything shuts between 21:00 and 22:30, far earlier than “late-night eating” suggests to a visitor. If you leave a bar at midnight wanting food, exactly one address below still applies. The skewer stall that runs until 4 AM.

    Charcoal skewers east of the centre, away from the Bach Dang cluster: betel-leaf beef, pork belly rolled around enoki, pork cartilage, intestine, octopus. It also does sea snails in coconut and pomelo chè, so this one can be a meal rather than a few skewers. Open from morning, unlike the stalls that only set up in the afternoon.

    A stall on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai near the Tram Huong roundabout, easy to stop at mid-walk. Beyond skewers it does fruit smoothies, so you can drink on the spot rather than hunting for something afterwards. The marinade runs salty and the chilli is heavy-handed, so say something when you order if you cannot take it. The sign says number 41, but the stall's own map listing carries no house number.

    At 2b Me Linh, on the main street and so easier to find than the stalls down lanes. The marinade is balanced and the skewers come with herbs and a proper dipping sauce. A small thing, but it is the difference between a stick of meat and a meal. The grilled rice paper here is crisp rather than greasy. It is a recent stall; if you are staying around Me Linh it is the nearest one on this page.

The thing to order is the grilled rice paper with fermented shrimp paste, which visitors from Saigon seek out because few places there sell it; the grilled egg cups and the stir-fried corn are well made too, and the anchovy salad is the unfamiliar one worth trying. Quick service, professionally run. It is small, so at the rush you wait for a seat.
