Overview

Lạc Cảnh opened in the 1960s and is still the best-known restaurant in the city when someone asks what to eat in Nha Trang. The name rests on honey-marinated beef grilled over charcoal at your own table: cut into cubes, heavily marinated, and cooked by you. It is a large two-floor room, and in the evening it is close to full.

Order the beef, and add the squid. Those are the two dishes people come back for: the beef sweet under a heavy marinade, the squid fresh and judged well. The salt-and-chilli grilled bread is worth adding, and the fried noodles carry more topping than noodle. The menu also runs to wild boar and grilled or steamed seafood, but if you come once, the beef is the reason.

And the part to know first, because it is where the kitchen is uneven: the beef is not the same every visit. Some evenings it is as sweet and tender as the name promises, some evenings it is chewy, and the prices sit above what the room looks like: a plate of vinegar-dipped squid is 195,000₫, and a meal for two with drinks and bread lands around 500,000₫. Knowing both, there is nothing to complain about; not knowing them is how people leave feeling the name oversold it.

The practical route: come early or book, because the evening fills both floors. Downstairs, near the coals, food arrives faster but the smoke is heavier; upstairs is airier. The address is 77 Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm in Xương Huân. Older articles give number 44, so if you are following a blog, follow the sign instead: the Lạc Cảnh board on this stretch is hard to mistake.

Same kind of table: the grill houses and Korean restaurants. With beer: the beer places and snail places.

Frequently asked

Is Lạc Cảnh worth it?

Yes, if you come for the charcoal-grilled beef and know two things in advance: the meat is not the same every visit, and the prices sit above what the room suggests. About 250,000₫ a head for beef, squid and drinks. If you want a sure thing for less, nem nướng Đặng Văn Quyên or bún sứa are the safer picks.

What should you order?

The grilled beef and the squid, with salt-and-chilli bread on the side. The fried noodles carry more topping than noodle, so they suit a group better than a pair.

Do you need to book?

In the evening, yes. It is a big two-floor room but it fills from about 18:30, and it is the restaurant visitors are pointed to most in this city. At lunchtime you can walk in.
