Overview

The first thing to know about coffee in Nha Trang is not the sea view, it is the clock. Thirteen open at six in the morning, earlier than most breakfast shops, so you can eat a bowl of fish noodles and sit straight down afterwards. The earliest is Anh Coffee Roasters at 5:30. At the other end, 22:00 is closing time for more than half the city, so if you eat late and then want to sit, you have to choose deliberately. And three places shut before 18:00, two of them among the best coffee in town, so do not save those for the afternoon.

The price range runs thirteenfold, and knowing that in advance saves a surprise at the till. At the low end, a black machine coffee is 20,000₫ at Vũ Garden in the Mipeco estate, 22,000₫ at Tiệm cà phê on Doan Tran Nghiep and 23,000₫ at Hòn Chồng View beside the rocks. All three proper shops, not cheap because they are poor. At the top, Alpaca serves a European breakfast at 135,000–285,000₫ a dish with a wine list, Sailing Club charges a cover in the evening, and The Cloud Bar at 163 Nguyen Thien Thuat is the most expensive address on any of these pages.

The thing most worth saying, because it wrecks other people's plans: the guides to Nha Trang's cafés send readers to a lot of shut doors. Across two popular articles, a third of the places that could be checked have closed permanently. Including Lam Cafe, whose bamboo architecture won a prize, and Rainforest, both of them headline entries. Six more give the wrong house number, worst of all Trốn Nha Trang: the article says an alley off Tran Phu, while the door is at 46 Le Quy Don. The list below leaves out the ones that have closed, and where two addresses are still circulating, the note says which to follow.

Some of these are not what their names suggest. Amore Gardens is a dog café rather than a garden one. There is a separate area for them and the house dogs move among the tables. Trà Sữa SEA 50 is a milk tea shop; do not go looking for a serious coffee. Alpaca is closer to a brunch restaurant than a café, and is the only place here with a children's menu. Mokuzo Kafe on the Phong Chau hill has been renamed Cloud Hill, and THAN Cafe is down to its Bach Dang branch. All three are easy to get wrong if you navigate by signboard.

Seventy is a lot to read through, so if you want the short answer: for the coffee itself, the five roasters; for an early start, the six-o'clock list; for a seat after 22:00, the late list; for somewhere near your hotel, the tourist quarter or the northern run; for somewhere worth sitting, the cafés with a view; and if you just want the fifteen people talk about most, they are here.     116 Trịnh Phong in the middle of town. A café built as a Đà Lạt-style timber house dropped into Nha Trang, and the name says as much. A pitched roof, pale timber walls and ceiling, industrial pendant lights, plain wooden furniture. Outside, a tiled yard with parasols and wooden stools, and a narrow walkway planted along both sides. Salt coffee and cold brew on the menu; the bar sits at the entrance so you can see the machines. Open 07:00–22:00, which makes it work morning or evening, and it is within walking distance of the central hotels.

It opens at 7:00, so an early sea-watching coffee works, but what it really is is an evening beach club: after 22:00 there is a cover of about 200,000₫ including a drink, beer at 110,000₫, and a three-litre tower running to a million. The food is adequate. When it fills, drinks come slowly. One cocktail took nearly 45 minutes. Come for the sand and the noise, not for the prices.

Chicken quesadillas, lasagna, gnocchi in tomato sauce, sourdough with cured salmon. Air-conditioned, quiet, with staff who advise each table on what to order. There is a children's menu and there are toys, which makes it a rare place where you can bring a child and still eat well. Shuts 21:30. Not everyone agrees: some come for the Latin dishes and find them short of the billing.

Seventeen hours, which makes it useful whenever you leave the hotel. The drinks are decent rather than remarkable; the egg-cream coffee or the fruit with yoghurt are the ones to order. The Soviet name and logo are deliberate, and plenty of people come for exactly that. A second branch at 112 Hong Bang keeps the same hours.

Two things to know: the drinks come heavy on ice, so half the glass is ice unless you ask for less; and the prices sit above everyday level. A group of six to eight will struggle to sit together.

Most of the good spots are outdoors, so rain costs you half the café, though rain also empties it, which has its own appeal.

In the evening the tables are set with candles and roses, so the same address serves a working day and a night out. The staff are professional and the plating is careful.

The tea itself is ordinary. If you want the oolong, take it away rather than settling in.

The pastries and the salted coffee are the reliable orders; the fish and chips come out soft rather than crisp.

Ring ahead if you still want to try.

Up top it is roomy and cool, looking across at the Tram Huong tower and 2/4 square, in Nha Trang height is the only way to see a sunset, because the city faces east. It lists itself as open around the clock, so sunrise is possible too, though with a roof terrace a phone call beats faith. The drinks are no better than fine; you come for the view.

Do not expect good coffee or a handsome room. It is a waiting room, and that is exactly where its value is.

Open until midnight, the latest of the city's genuine cafés. Order coffee, not the milk tea or fruit teas: they are pre-mixed with no sweetness to adjust, and some find them undrinkably sweet. The toilets and the drinking water are two things the place does not keep on top of.

The room is large and calm, mostly Russian, with Russian-speaking staff. One practical note: it closes at 2 and does not always say so in advance, so if you arrive at one in the morning, ask.

Cleanliness is the weakest part, dust and cigarette ends on the floor, tables not wiped in time. Come for the position and the price rather than the experience.
